Theresa
Caballero is running for the
Office of District Attorney,
2008.
She was raised
in El Paso, Texas and is the
eldest of five children. She
attended St. Joseph's grade
school, Burgess High School and
is a graduate of Loretto Academy
(1984). After high school, she
went to Barnard College/Columbia
University in New York City
where she obtained a degree in
Latin American Studies (1988).
During her college years, she
also studied at the Universidad
Iberoamericana in Mexico City,
México. After college, she
returned to Texas where she
earned a law degree from the
University of Texas at Austin
School of Law (1990). During law
school, she clerked for the
highest criminal court in Texas,
the Court of Criminal Appeals,
under Justice Rusty Duncan.
After law school, Theresa moved
to our nation's capitol where
she worked for the United States
Congress in the Capitol Hill
Office of El Paso Congressman,
Ronald Coleman (D). After a year
in D.C., she moved to Taiwan
where she taught English to
Chinese children and adults.
During her two years in Asia,
she worked as well as traveled
to India, Nepal, Sri Lanka,
Thailand, Malaysia and South
Korea.
In 1994, Theresa returned home
to El Paso with a pocketful of
experience and a couple of
degrees and took a position with
the DA's office where for three
years she worked representing
the State of Texas before the
grand jury as well as juries in
misdemeanors and felonies.
Besides prosecuting numerous
criminal jury trials, she was
also assigned to the special
Drug Task Force Unit where she
was the attorney posted to do
not only drug prosecutions but
also civil property forfeitures.
In that position, she went to
court and moved for and obtained
the forfeiture of thousands of
dollars worth of property from
the pockets of drug dealers
which went into the coffers of
the tax payer.
In 1998, Theresa opened up her
own law office and has been in
private practice ever since.
Over the last eight and half
years she has garnered a wide
array of experience representing
abused and neglected children,
people accused of crimes, a
plaintiff in a federal civil
rights case, soldiers in
Military Courts Martial, and
employees before the civil
service commission, amongst
other cases. She has tried cases
in Municipal Courts, Justice of
the Peace Courts, County Courts,
State District Courts, Federal
Courts from here to Midland, the
Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals,
and Military Courts as well as
appeared on behalf of clients in
front of City Council, the
Public Service Board, and a
State Board in Austin, Texas.
She has tried cases all over
West Texas. To this day, she has
never lost a jury trial to the
El Paso DA's Office.
Theresa sat on the County
Committee that drafted the El
Paso County Code of Ethics. She
has been instrumental in
bringing to light corruption in
our community and has fought
year after year for honest
government and affordable taxes.
Now Theresa has decided to run
for office and she is humbly
asking for your help. She also
wants to thank the many people
who have already so generously
come forward to support her. If
elected, she promises to restore
Justice through Reform to our
DA's office so that we never
again see another Brandon Moon
case in our community (much more
about this case later).
Theresa invites you to check her
website regularly as she will be
updating you on the issues in
this campaign and how she plans
to effect great change and make
this a better place to live.
